Tequila cocktail with vibrant presentation

The Story Behind Tequila and Why It Works So Well in Cocktails

Few spirits have undergone a transformation quite like tequila. Once associated mostly with quick shots, it has evolved into one of the most respected spirits in modern cocktail culture.

For a long time, tequila was associated mostly with quick shots and party moments. But over the last two decades, tequila has evolved into one of the most respected spirits in modern cocktail culture.

Today, bartenders around the world use tequila not only for its bold flavour, but for the depth, character and versatility it brings to cocktails.

At Shake & Strain Bar, tequila is one of the spirits we love working with when designing cocktail menus for events. Its bright energy, natural citrus compatibility and expressive character make it perfect for social celebrations.

What Is Tequila?

Tequila is a distilled spirit made from the blue agave plant, primarily produced in specific regions of Mexico, most famously in the state of Jalisco.

Unlike grain based spirits, tequila begins with agave, a succulent plant that takes years to mature before it can be harvested. Once harvested, the agave hearts are cooked, crushed, fermented and distilled to create tequila.

Because of this process, tequila carries a flavour profile that feels distinct and expressive. It often includes notes of cooked agave, citrus, herbal freshness, subtle sweetness and earthy minerality.

The Different Styles of Tequila

Not all tequila tastes the same. The style depends largely on how long it is aged, and understanding these categories helps bartenders choose the right tequila for the right cocktail.

Blanco

Typically unaged or rested only briefly before bottling.

This style highlights the pure character of the agave, making it bright, fresh and expressive. Because of its vibrant profile, blanco tequila is the most commonly used style in cocktails.

It works especially well in drinks that emphasise citrus, freshness and energy.

Joven

Sometimes called gold tequila, is typically a blend of blanco tequila with small amounts of aged tequila.

The result is a spirit that combines the brightness of young tequila with subtle softness and complexity from the aged component.

While it is less commonly used in craft cocktail programs than blanco or reposado, joven tequila can bring balance and smoothness to certain cocktail styles.

Reposado

Aged in oak barrels for a few months. Softer and rounder, with subtle notes of vanilla, spice and warmth.

Reposado is often used when a cocktail needs slightly more structure and depth without losing freshness.

Añejo

Aged longer, typically between one and three years. During this time, the spirit develops deeper flavours such as caramel, toasted oak and gentle spice.

Because of its richness, añejo tequila can work beautifully in more spirit-forward cocktails where complexity and warmth are part of the experience.

Extra Añejo

Aged for more than three years, creating an even deeper and more luxurious flavour profile.

These tequilas often develop notes similar to aged whiskies or cognacs, including caramel, dried fruit, oak and spice.

While extra añejo is frequently enjoyed neat, it can also bring remarkable depth to certain premium cocktails when used thoughtfully.

Why It Matters

Each style creates a different mood in a cocktail, which is why tequila can work across very different event moments.

One of tequila's strengths is that it can feel both vibrant and refined, depending on how it is used.

Why Bartenders Love Tequila

From a mixology perspective, tequila offers an incredible balance between intensity and freshness.

Bartender preparing a tequila cocktail

It has enough personality to stand out in a cocktail, but also pairs naturally with a wide range of ingredients including citrus fruits, tropical fruits, herbal ingredients, spice and floral notes.

Because of this, tequila allows bartenders to create drinks that feel vibrant, refreshing and layered without losing balance.

In many ways, tequila creates cocktails that feel alive and expressive, which is exactly what many events need.

Why Tequila Works So Well in Events

When we design cocktail menus for events, tequila often plays an important role in creating energy and social interaction.

The Role of Tequila in Modern Cocktail Culture

In recent years, tequila has become one of the most exciting categories in the global spirits industry. Craft producers have placed more focus on quality, traditional production methods and authentic agave expression.

At the same time, bartenders have embraced tequila as a foundation for modern cocktails that feel bold yet balanced.

This shift has helped tequila move far beyond its old reputation and into a spirit associated with craft, culture and creativity.

How We Use Tequila at Shake & Strain Bar

When designing cocktail menus for events, tequila allows us to create drinks that feel vibrant and memorable.

Depending on the event style, we may design cocktails that lean into fresh citrus and bright acidity, tropical fruit combinations, herbal or botanical elements, or balanced spice and warmth.

Tequila also works beautifully with experiential presentation techniques, such as smoked cocktails, custom ice or theatrical garnishes. These details help transform a simple drink into a full cocktail experience for guests.

Tequila cocktails bring colour, energy and personality to the bar experience.

A Spirit That Brings Energy to the Bar

Tequila is more than just a spirit. It carries a sense of celebration, culture and vibrancy that translates beautifully into cocktail experiences.

Whether it appears in a bright citrus cocktail or a more complex modern creation, tequila has a way of bringing life to the bar.

For events where energy, connection and atmosphere matter, tequila often becomes one of the most powerful ingredients behind the experience.
